As temperatures soar, it’s essential to protect those most vulnerable to heat – especially older adults. At Riverside, we’re committed to helping our clients stay safe and comfortable all year round, including during extreme summer weather.

Hot weather can be more than just uncomfortable – for older people, it can lead to heat exhaustion, dehydration, or even heatstroke. That’s why we’re sharing this guide on staying cool and how loved ones and care providers like Riverside can support those most at risk.

💧 Hydration is Key

Older adults should aim to drink 6–8 cups of water a day, even if they don’t feel thirsty – that’s roughly 1.5 to 2 litres daily. During a heatwave, this should increase slightly to keep the body hydrated.

Tips:

  • Offer water regularly throughout the day.

  • Add flavour with lemon, cucumber, or mint if plain water is unappealing.

  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol, which can dehydrate.

🏠 Keeping the Home Cool

  • Close curtains and blinds during the day to block direct sunlight.

  • Open windows at cooler times, like early morning or evening.

  • Use fans or portable air coolers where possible.

  • Stay downstairs if the home gets very warm upstairs.

👕 Dress Lightly

  • Choose light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing made of cotton or other breathable materials.

  • Wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses can help when outdoors.

  • Cool showers or damp cloths can reduce body temperature.

🍽️ Eat Light

Heavy meals can raise body temperature. Encourage small, light meals throughout the day, such as salads, fruit, and chilled soups.

🤝 How Others Can Help

Family, Friends & Neighbours:

  • Check in regularly, especially during peak heat hours.

  • Ensure they have enough water, fans, and cool spaces.

  • Help with errands to avoid older people going out in the heat.

Riverside Home Care Team:

  • Our carers are trained to spot early signs of dehydration or heat exhaustion.

  • We support hydration reminders, ensure a cool environment, and provide daily wellness checks.

  • We’ll also contact families if we have concerns about heat-related risks.
